We compare and contrast two properties that play key role in defining boundaries. Contrasts are sharp boundaries and Gradients are smooth boundaries. Chiaroscuro and sfumato are compared in art history as examples of contrast and gradients. Gradients considered in architecture as levels of size reduction.
